Oh Canada (2024)

Summary:

“Oh, Canada” (2024) is a drama film directed by Paul Schrader, adapted from Russell Banks’ 2021 novel “Foregone.” The story centers on Leonard “Leo” Fife, portrayed by Richard Gere, a renowned documentary filmmaker who fled to Canada during the Vietnam War era. As Leo faces terminal cancer in his later years, he consents to a final interview conducted by his former student, Malcolm MacLeod (Michael Imperioli). During this interview, Leo aims to unveil long-held secrets and dismantle the myths surrounding his life and career. The narrative oscillates between past and present, with Jacob Elordi depicting the younger Leo, and Uma Thurman as Emma, Leo’s third wife and another of his former students. Through these reflections, the film delves into themes of personal truth, the consequences of one’s choices, and the complex interplay between public persona and private reality. “Oh, Canada” premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024, and was released by Kino Lorber on December 6, 2024.
