The Legend of Aqua Witch (2022) is a Chinese fantasy action film directed by Hui Xiang. Set during the Republican era, the story unfolds in Taiping County’s opera house during the Ghost Festival. The opera troupe stages a play for the “Ghost King of Yin Mountain,” coinciding with police captain Fang Jingru’s (played by Zhang Zijian) birthday celebration. The festivities take a horrifying turn when a man, engulfed in flames, falls from the stage, mirroring the Ghost King’s fiery demise. Simultaneously, paper figures and the Ghost King’s tablets beneath the stage ignite spontaneously. Enraged, Fang Jingru initiates an investigation, enlisting Xu Sijiu (played by Liu Zhiyang), the head of Fengtian’s pagoda store. As the inquiry deepens, Xu Sijiu uncovers an underground ice cellar near Qujiang Pool, littered with human bones, revealing dark secrets tied to the water monster terrorizing the region.
